Details

Original handwritten French correspondence dated 2 April 1912 in Lorient, written on beautifully illustrated “Marine” stationery featuring a sailor, warships and maritime scenes.

This evocative early 20th-century letter is addressed to the writer’s parents and offers a personal glimpse into everyday life during military or naval service in France.

The writer discusses his daily situation, money and purchases, equipment, service conditions and the routines of life away from home. He also refers to discipline and to the more serious nature of his present service compared with an earlier posting.

The decorative printed heading is especially attractive, showing a French sailor standing beside naval vessels and harbour scenes. The combination of personal correspondence and maritime imagery makes this an appealing piece for collectors of French military history, naval ephemera, handwritten letters and early 20th-century documents.
