Details

Original early twentieth-century French postcard from the “Paris Vécu” series, published by L. J. & Cie, Angoulême-Paris.

This highly detailed photographic postcard depicts “Un Kiosque à Journaux”, a Parisian newspaper kiosk surrounded by customers and passers-by.

The kiosk is covered with newspapers, illustrated publications and period advertising, including a striking JOB advertisement above the stand. The scene captures the lively atmosphere of everyday street commerce and the importance of the press in Parisian daily life at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Several men stand around the kiosk reading or browsing the publications, while additional figures can be seen in the street behind them. The architectural setting, advertising posters and street activity give the image a particularly rich documentary character.

Printed at the lower edge:

“Paris Vécu. — Un Kiosque à Journaux”

and

“L. J. & Cie, édit., Angoulême-Paris”

This example is unused and unposted, with an undivided address-only back, no correspondence, no postage stamp and no postal cancellation.

A pencil inventory notation is visible in the upper left corner of the reverse.

A particularly appealing piece for collectors of old Paris, newspaper history, street trades, advertising history, social history and antique French postcards.
