Details

Original early twentieth-century French postcard from the “Paris Vécu” series, published by L. J. & Cie, Angoulême-Paris.

This atmospheric photographic postcard depicts “Aux Tuileries – Bateaux à louer”, a leisure scene in the Tuileries Garden in Paris.

Several small model sailing boats are arranged in the foreground, while visitors stroll and sit throughout the garden in the background. The scene offers a charming glimpse of popular leisure and everyday life in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century, when model boats were a familiar attraction in the Tuileries.

The composition is particularly evocative, combining Parisian park life, children’s recreation and Belle Époque social history.

Printed at the lower edge:

“Paris Vécu. — Aux Tuileries. — Bateaux à louer”

and

“L. J. & Cie, édit., Angoulême-Paris”

This example is circulated and posted, with an undivided address-only back, handwritten addressing, an original green French 5-centime postage stamp, and postal cancellation marks.

Because the reverse was reserved for the address, a short handwritten message was added directly to the front of the postcard.

A particularly appealing piece for collectors of old Paris, the Tuileries, Parisian leisure, model boats, social history, postal history and antique French postcards.
