Details

Original early twentieth-century French postcard from the “Paris Vécu” series, published by L. J. & Cie, Angoulême-Paris.

This atmospheric photographic postcard depicts “Le Glacier populaire”, a small popular ice cream kiosk in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The scene shows the open-fronted kiosk with its attendants, customers and passers-by, together with a small service cart standing alongside. Signs advertising glaces can be seen around the stand, creating a particularly evocative glimpse of everyday Parisian leisure and street commerce during the Belle Époque.

The postcard offers a charming visual record of the small businesses and popular pleasures that formed part of daily life in old Paris.

Printed at the lower edge:

“Paris Vécu. — Le Glacier populaire”

and along the left edge:

“L. J. & Cie, édit., Angoulême-Paris”

The front also bears several original handwritten inscriptions, including a date at the upper right reading “5 Août 1903”, as well as a large handwritten greeting/signature across the lower right.

This example is circulated and posted, with an undivided address-only back, handwritten addressing, an original green French 5-centime postage stamp and several postal cancellations.

A charming piece for collectors of old Paris, vintage food and drink imagery, street trades, social history, postal history and antique French postcards.
