Les 4 Saisons – The Four Seasons of Life
A beautiful set of four original antique French postcards published by Albert Bergeret & Cie in Nancy, France, in the early 20th century.
Entitled Les 4 Saisons (The Four Seasons), this poetic photographic series portrays Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter through four expressive female figures, each representing a different stage of human life.
Combining elegant period photography, symbolic imagery and short poems printed in red, these postcards offer a fascinating glimpse into the artistic and sentimental world of the French Belle Époque.
The Four Seasons
Spring – Le Printemps
A young girl surrounded by flowers and blossoms represents childhood, innocence and the promise of life. Her raised arm and floral decorations evoke the awakening of nature.
Summer – L'Été
A beautiful young woman carrying golden sheaves of wheat embodies youth, beauty, love and the fullness of life. Her elaborate hat and graceful pose reflect the fashions of the early 1900s.
Autumn – L'Automne
A mature woman carrying baskets filled with fruit and grapes symbolises abundance, harvest and the passing of time. The accompanying poem reflects on beauty and the approaching decline of youth.
Winter – L'Hiver
An elderly woman carrying a bundle of firewood through a snowy landscape represents old age and the final season of life. The poetic caption adds a poignant reflection on mortality and the passing years.
Together, these four postcards create a complete visual narrative exploring the passage of time through the changing seasons.
Their carefully composed photographs and poetic verses make this series a particularly charming example of early 20th-century French postcard art.
