Faith, Hope & Charity – Three Allegorical Postcards from Belle Époque France

A beautiful set of three original antique French photographic postcards published by A. Bergeret & Cie in Nancy, France, during the early 20th century.

This charming photographic series illustrates the three theological virtues: Faith (La Foi), Hope (L'Espérance) and Charity (La Charité).

Through carefully staged portraits of young girls, the photographs transform these traditional Christian virtues into delicate allegorical scenes, combining childhood innocence, symbolic objects and the refined aesthetics of the French Belle Époque.

Each postcard bears its original numbered French title printed in red.

The three cards form a particularly harmonious thematic ensemble, offering a fascinating example of allegorical photography and the visual culture of early 20th-century France.

The Three Postcards

No. I – La Foi (Faith)

A young girl dressed in a light-coloured gown rests her clasped hands beneath her chin, gazing thoughtfully upwards.

Her contemplative expression and prayerful gesture evoke faith, trust and spiritual devotion.

The photograph is beautifully composed, with delicate lace fabrics and soft studio lighting.

The illustrated front also retains an original handwritten greeting and signature.

No. II – L'Espérance (Hope)

A young girl sits at an elegant writing desk, carefully writing on a sheet of paper.

A small globe, books, an inkwell and other writing accessories complete the composition, while a symbolic image of books appears above her.

The scene evokes education, knowledge, ambition and hope for the future.

A particularly attractive postcard for collectors of antique writing accessories, historical stationery and Belle Époque photography.

The illustrated front retains an extensive handwritten message.

No. III – La Charité (Charity)

A young girl wearing an elegant dress and hat offers a coin to an outstretched hand.

This simple yet expressive gesture represents generosity, compassion and the act of giving.

The photograph captures the virtue of charity through a carefully arranged studio composition.

The original postcard retains handwritten correspondence across part of the illustrated front.

The Three Theological Virtues

Faith, Hope and Charity occupy an important place in Christian symbolism and European artistic traditions.

Frequently represented in paintings, sculptures and religious illustrations, these three virtues were also explored through photography and printed imagery.

In this Bergeret series, the traditional allegorical subjects are interpreted through graceful portraits of children, reflecting the artistic tastes and sentimental imagery of the Belle Époque.

The surviving postcards are numbered I, II and III and illustrate all three theological virtues, suggesting a complete thematic set, although the original publisher's series composition has not been independently confirmed.

Together, they form a beautiful collection for admirers of antique French photography, religious symbolism, historical ephemera and early postcard publishing.
