A charming set of seven original French postcards published by Albert Bergeret & Cie in Nancy, France, in the early 20th century.

Entitled Bureau de Placement (Employment Agency), this delightful photographic series presents seven fictional job applicants through amusing portraits and witty descriptions of their personalities, skills and professional ambitions.

From a young shop assistant and a housemaid to aspiring employees with rather questionable qualifications, each postcard captures the playful humour and social conventions of the French Belle Époque.

The photographs combine expressive characters, period costumes, ornamental typography and printed red captions. Several postcards also feature delicate touches of colour.

Several postcards have travelled through the French postal system, retaining handwritten addresses, original postage stamps and period postmarks.

Together, these seven postcards offer a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century French humour, employment, fashion and everyday life.
