Brune ou Blonde – A Belle Époque Love Story in Five Postcards

A delightful set of five original antique French postcards published by Édition Bergeret in Nancy, France, during the early 20th century.

Entitled Brune ou Blonde (Brunette or Blonde), this charming photographic series tells a playful romantic story through five consecutive illustrated scenes, numbered 1 to 5.

At the centre of the story is a gentleman with a neatly groomed moustache, torn between the charms of two young women: a brunette and a blonde.

Each postcard captures a different moment in his romantic dilemma, accompanied by a short humorous poem printed in red.

As the story unfolds, flirtation gives way to indecision, until the gentleman finds himself caught between the two women, unable to choose either one.

The expressive photographic portraits are presented within elegant ornamental frames reminiscent of the Art Nouveau style, creating a wonderful example of French Belle Époque postcard design.

The Five Postcards

  • No. 1 – Brune ou Blonde: The gentleman wonders which of the two young women will win his heart.

  • No. 2 – Brune ou Blonde: He declares his affection for the brunette.

  • No. 3 – Brune ou Blonde: His attention turns towards the charming blonde.

  • No. 4 – Brune ou Blonde: Both women compete for his affection, leaving him increasingly undecided.

  • No. 5 – Brune ou Blonde: The story reaches its amusing conclusion as the three characters appear together.

Together, these five postcards form a delightful visual narrative, reflecting the romantic humour, fashions and social customs of France during the Belle Époque.
