1958–1963 Alexis Dubois Archive – Early EEC Career
Details
A remarkable four-document archival group tracing the transition of senior Belgian civil servant Alexis-Théodore-Camille Dubois from the Belgian Customs and Excise Administration to service within the newly established European Economic Community.
Dating from 1958 to 1963, these original Belgian administrative documents record an important period in Dubois’s career, when he was placed on special assignment in order to take up a position within the services of the European Economic Community (EEC).
The group provides an unusual documentary link between the Belgian Customs administration and the formative years of European institutional history.

Official Belgian Ministry of Finance document placing Alexis-Théodore-Camille Dubois, then Director at the Central Administration of Customs and Excise, on special leave for a period of five years from 1 June 1958 in order to take up a position within the services of the European Economic Community.

Letter from the Belgian Customs and Excise Administration forwarding the preceding order concerning the extension of his special assignment.
Historical context
The European Economic Community had been established only shortly before Dubois entered its service. These papers document the movement of an experienced senior Belgian customs official into the emerging European administration during its formative years.
Later documents preserved within the Alexis Dubois Archive identify him as a Director within the Directorate-General for the Internal Market of the European Economic Community, giving this earlier administrative group particular historical significance.
Together, these documents form a continuous record of Dubois’s transition from Belgian national administration to European institutional service.
From the original Alexis Dubois Archive, preserved together for more than sixty years.
