Details

A coherent three-document archival group relating to the promotion of Belgian senior civil servant Alexis-Théodore-Camille Dubois to Commander of the Order of the Crown in 1966.

The group preserves the complete administrative sequence surrounding this distinction: the Royal Decree, the official notification sent by the Belgian Customs and Excise Administration, and Alexis Dubois’s personally signed reply.

At the time, Dubois held the rank of Inspector General within the Belgian Customs and Excise Administration, while his career was also closely connected with the emerging institutions of the European Economic Community.

The archive includes

1. Royal Decree – 14 February 1966 – two pages
Official bilingual Belgian decree issued in the name of King Baudouin, promoting Alexis-Théodore-Camille Dubois to the rank of Commander of the Order of the Crown.

The decree records Dubois as Inspector General of the Customs and Excise Administration and states that he takes rank in the Order from 8 April 1960.

French and Dutch text, with official certification, stamp and signature.

2. Official notification – 7 March 1966
Letter from the Belgian Ministry of Finance, Customs and Excise Administration, informing Dubois of his promotion.

Signed by G. Buyse, Director General, who also conveys the congratulations of the Secretary General.

3. Signed reply from Alexis Dubois – 14 March 1966
Dubois formally acknowledges receipt of the notification and expresses his thanks for the congratulations received.

Signed A. Dubois – Inspecteur Général e.d.

Historical context

The Order of the Crown is one of Belgium’s national orders of merit. The grade of Commander represented a significant distinction within the career of a senior Belgian civil servant.

This group is particularly interesting because it preserves the entire administrative exchange surrounding the decoration rather than the decree alone.

It forms part of The Alexis Dubois Archive, an extensive group of original papers documenting Dubois’s career from the Belgian Customs and Excise Administration to senior European institutional service.

From the original Alexis Dubois Archive, preserved together for approximately sixty years.
