1908 French Metalware Invoice & Bill of Exchange – Joanny Joly, Mâcon
Details
Original French ephemera: a commercial invoice dated 28 November 1908, issued by Joanny Joly of Mâcon, manufacturer of sheet-metal goods, copperware and galvanised articles, accompanied by its matching bill of exchange.
The invoice features an attractive illustrated letterhead showing the company’s steam-powered factory, together with the headings “Manufacture de Tôlerie”, “Cuivrerie & Articles Galvanisés” and references to stove pipes, heaters and kitchen stoves.
The business is identified as Joanny Joly, Successeur, with offices at 74 Rue de Lyon, Mâcon.
The handwritten invoice is addressed to J. Salvat, quincaillier, and lists various metal and hardware goods, with quantities, weights, prices and commercial calculations entered in the ruled accounting section.
The final amount shown on the invoice is 91.70 francs.
Accompanying the invoice is an original commercial bill of exchange / draft, also dated 28 November 1908, for the same amount of 91.70 francs.
This document bears the Joanny Joly company name and factory illustration, handwritten payment instructions, a fiscal stamp, numerous commercial and banking markings, and several endorsements on the reverse documenting its circulation for payment during early 1909.
Together, the two documents offer a particularly interesting glimpse into the commercial, industrial and banking practices of early twentieth-century France.
A strong example of French industrial ephemera combining metalworking history, trade documentation, accounting and financial history.
