Details

Original French military correspondence dated 14 January 1902 in Nancy, handwritten by a serviceman to his parents on richly illustrated military stationery.

This remarkable early 20th-century letter combines an extensive handwritten family correspondence with an especially attractive colour-printed military illustration.

The front of the stationery features a vivid scene of French soldiers in their quarters, with uniforms, beds and everyday barracks life. The illustration was published by E. Pandevant, Charenton-Paris, and bears the printed mention “Modèle Déposé (N°26)”.

The letter begins:

“Nancy le 14 Janvier 1902 – Chers Parents”

The writer gives his family news about his daily life, military service, money and personal matters. The extensive handwritten text continues over several sides, making this much more than a decorative military sheet: it is an intimate surviving record of the everyday life of a young French serviceman at the beginning of the 20th century.

The combination of colour military imagery, extensive handwriting and a precisely dated personal correspondence gives the document strong visual and historical appeal.
